Japanese Iron Shafts: Weights and How to Choose (N.S. Pro, Modus3)

"What does the shaft weigh?" is one of the questions we hear most. Used Japanese irons often come with N.S. Pro or Modus3 shafts, which are less familiar to many US golfers than Dynamic Gold. Here are the makers' published weights, so you can compare them with what you play now.

Published shaft weights

  • N.S. Pro 950GH: R 94.5 g, SR 97 g, S 98 g, X 104 g
  • N.S. Pro 950GH neo: R 94.5 g, SR 97 g, S 98 g, X 104 g
  • Modus3 Tour 105: R 103 g, S 106.5 g, X 112 g
  • N.S. Pro 1050GH: R 106 g, S 109.5 g, X 114 g
  • Modus3 Tour 120: R 111 g, S 114 g, X 120 g, TX 126 g
  • Modus3 Tour 130: R 121 g, S 124 g, X 129 g
  • Dynamic Gold S200: 127 g

Figures come from Nippon Shaft and True Temper. These are weights for the shaft before it is cut. A fitted shaft is shorter, so treat them as a guide for comparing shafts rather than the weight of a particular club.

What the numbers tell you

Start from your current shaft. If you play Dynamic Gold, a 950GH is about 30 g lighter. That is a big change you will feel in every swing. A Modus3 Tour 120 is a much smaller step.

Flex and weight are separate. A 950GH in X is still lighter than a Modus3 Tour 120 in R. A stiff flex does not mean a heavy shaft, so check both.

SR is not on every shaft. The 950GH and 950GH neo come in SR. The Modus3 Tour models listed here go from R straight to S.

How to choose

Moving from a heavy steel shaft? Try a step of 10 to 20 g rather than a large jump.

Want a lighter set? The 950GH family is the common choice in Japan, and it is the shaft we list most often.

Check the listing. Many used sets have been reshafted, so go by the shaft and flex shown for that club, not what the model came with new. If the shaft or flex is not clear, ask us before you buy.
